Mothers Day is celebrating on various days in different countries. The modern celebration was established in 1908 in the United States when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Church.  She successfully campaigned to make the second sunday in May a recognised as a holiday in the United States.

In Ireland and continental Europe, there was an older religious tradition of celebrating Mothering Sunday.  It was a day when servants were given a day off to visit their mother church and their own mothers.  On the way to church children would pick flowers to give to their mothers.

The tradition had tended to lapse when, in 1914, Constance Penswick-Smith, inspired by the movement in the United States created the Mothering Sunday Movement in England.  This brought about a revival of the church tradition in the Church of England.   The modern tradition of Mothers Day in Ireland and the UK is celebrated on the same day as Mothering Sunday.

This year, 2018 Mother's Day is celebrated in Ireland, UK and other parts of Europe on March 11th (the 4th Sunday of Lent) it will be celebrated in the USA on May 13th.

The tradition of giving flowers is often accompanied by giving a gift.  deBlaca Jewellery, is an ideal Mother's Day gift - flowers in silver and gold that last forever.
