Trick or Treat and Pumpkins the Celtic origin of Halloween Traditions

The traditional games and symbols of Halloween originated in the customs associated with the Celtic Festival of Samhain.

  • Pumpkin Jack O'Lantern - to prevent unwelcome spies entering their homes at Samhain, the Celts created menacing faces out of turnips placing a candle inside and left them on their doorsteps.  When the custom was brought to America, pumpkins were found be easier to carve than turnips so the pumpkin is now the preferred Jack O'Lantern.
  • Trick Or Treat - the tradition of going from house to house in costume has been popular in many countries  for many years.  It dates back to Celtic times, when Druids would dress up to disguise themselves as spirits and devils to scare off evil.
  • Halloween Bonfire - the ancient Celts believed that the dead returned to earth on Samhain.  They would gather to light bonfires, offer sacrifices and pya homage to the deceased.

The new deBlaca Nightscape Collection is inspired by the night sky - stars and moons with no witches or cats !
